Pretty much take any film that Sean Connery is in and, well, Sean is Sean. Sean works wonderfully with his character, a kind of monk based Sherlock Holmes of the middle ages.

Lovely imagery, great casting. Murray Abraham is kind of like Sean I'm not a big Christian Slater fan but in this film he has presence and believability.

William Hickey is another personality player and yet is another fit. Ron Pearlman, in my view, gives a brilliant performance stealing the film as a half witted but crafty Salvatore.

Is this a movie to own? Only if you like owning too many movies Is this a movie to see? See it more than once?

Maybe but no more than every 15 years. Not long ago, I found an old beat-up paperback of this novel. I loved the book so much I decided to buy the DVD of the movie.

As is usually the case when they make a movie of a book, the movie cannot contain everything in the book and they take liberties with the story.

The movie does, however, retain the main atmosphere and outline of the book. The director's commentary discussing the making of the film shows the attention to detail and the sometimes dangerous incidents involved.

The entire cast is excellent. The sets, both real and constructed, are amazing. Unfortunately, movies are not made like this anymore.

I definitely recommend this movie, but suggest reading the book first. The book is much better, but hey, this movie is still great! Very controversial, like most of H.

Eco's works. It points directly into the face of religious bigotry and dogmatic hipocresy. Very well played by S.

Connery, always a master actor. Settings and timeframes are excellent. If you like Sherlock Holmes, you'll like this film.

A detective thriller during the dark ages of religious oppression. Murray Abraham. It's a well researched, meticulously implemented view into life in the s.

Watch the movie "normally" of course first - and then watch it with the director's cut vocals. You'll hear the incredible level of detail they put into getting every aspect correct.

They ensured the hand-made costumes were created with authentic raw ingredients. Their meticulous work on the cups, bowls, and other small background items means that some of those now reside in museums for their workmanship.

They hand created the outer buildings to get the look just right. The inside was done at a location in Germany, which I've visited.

The storyline is based on the book by Umberto Eco. It's sort of a mix of Sherlock Holmes with William of Ockham - i. And it's even more than that.

You get a fascinating look into the politics at the time. Gui arranges for the prisoners to be burned at the stake, while William, having "relapsed", will be taken to Avignon.

The papal delegates condemn the Franciscans for William's obstinacy and end the debate. As the monks prepare to burn Gui's prisoners, Malachia is found dying, with black stains on his tongue and finger.

Although Malachia's death vindicates William's warning, Gui takes it as proof that William is the murderer, and orders his arrest.

Fleeing Gui's guards, William and Adso re-enter the secret library and come face to face with the Venerable Jorge, the oldest denizen of the abbey.

Having decoded the lines on the translator's parchment, William demands that Jorge turn over the book that the dead men had been reading: Aristotle 's Second Book of Poetics on Comedy.

Jorge hates laughter, thinking it undermines faith in God, and a book on laughter written by Arisotle will only bring laughter to the wise men, and undermine the faith among those of learning.

To prevent that, Jorge killed those who had read the book by poisoning its pages. Jorge gives the book to William, thinking he too will suffer the poison.

When William reveals that he is wearing gloves, Jorge grabs the book, then starts a blaze that quickly engulfs the library.

William stays behind, trying to save some of the books and encouraging Adso to leave. Jorge kills himself by consuming the poison-coated pages.

Seeing the fire, the monks abandon the prisoners, allowing the local peasants to save the girl, though Salvatore and Remigio die. Adso chases Gui, who manages to escape him, but the peasants push his wagon off a cliff, impaling him.

As William and Adso depart, Adso encounters the girl, stops for a few seconds, but eventually chooses to go with William.

The much older Adso states that he never regretted his decision as he learned many more things from William before their ways parted.

He also says that the girl was the only earthly love of his life, but he never learned her name. Director Jean-Jacques Annaud once told Umberto Eco that he was convinced the book was written for only one person to direct: himself.

He felt personally intrigued by the project and other things because of a lifelong fascination with medieval churches and a great familiarity with Latin and Greek.

Annaud spent four years preparing the film, traveling throughout the United States and Europe, searching for the perfect multi-ethnic cast with interesting and distinctive faces.

He resisted suggestions to cast Sean Connery for the part of William because he felt the character, who was already an amalgam of Sherlock Holmes and William of Occam , would become too overwhelming with " " added.

Christian Slater was cast through a large-scale audition of teenage boys. Annaud did not explain to Slater what she would be doing in order to elicit a more authentic performance from the actors.

The exterior and some of the interiors of the monastery seen in the film were constructed as a replica on a hilltop outside Rome and ended up being the biggest exterior set built in Europe since Cleopatra Many of the interiors were shot at Eberbach Abbey , Germany.

Most props, including period illuminated manuscripts, were produced specifically for the film. Roger Ebert gave the film 2.

What we get is a very confused story It's all inspiration and no discipline. And the movie is obliged to choose only the lettuce or the cheese, eliminating everything else — the theological side, the political side.

You get a fascinating look into the politics at the time. Factions were vying against each other, either trying to hold onto power or attempting to bring a bit of equality for the poor.

I love how the book shows that people were not necessarily "insular" in the middle ages. Sometimes people get the sense that in the middle ages every person stayed in their village and had no idea about other cultures.

Quite the contrary - people did travel and explore. This monastery has residents from all over the known world, black and white, northern and southern.

They come together for a common cause. As an author of medieval novels I definitely rank this as a "must see" for a well researched view into this time period.

I'll note that, given the storyline, this is all about MALE life and times - the sole female who speaks only grunts and moans.

So the movie is very closely focused in on men, and on men "of the cloth" at that. So, that being said, you get a wealth of information about the type of utensils they used, the lighting, the heating, styles of clothes, and so on.

Well recommended. Sean Connery is a great actor. I am reading the book by Umberto Eco and wanted to view the film. Was fortunate to find the film - DVD in very good used condition.

The book is very detailed. It would be difficult for the film to cover all of these details in a short time period.

The film is worth watching. If it where available in blue ray dvd it would be an added plus.. I am glad this fine film exists. It is the time of The Inquisition.

Set in a Benedictine abbey in northern Italy, the remote abbey's expansive architecture amidst rural poverty reinforces the film's medieval character.

The abbey's monks are sorely troubled by unexplained events that some fear evidence demonic presence.

But the cloistered monks are equally troubled when outsiders, a Franciscan investigator Sean Connery and his novice helper Christian Slater in his first film role arrive.

And the cloistered monks positively panic after a second monk's violent death motivates the arrival of a Grand Inquisitor.

This film is wonderfully cast with character actors who are physically believable as medieval monks.

Christian Slater plays the investigator's novice helper with optimism and with naive innocence.
